Join us for a special presentation by two local writers of children’s picture books with a message of diversity and inclusion for children. Fern Nissim and Robbin Miller present original self-published picture books focusing on these important themes. Kids will enjoy story readings, activities including scavenger hunts, prizes and giveaways during the two-hour program.

“Everyone’s family has a story to tell about how they arrived in America,” says Shrewsbury writer/artist Fern Nissim. ‘The Little Red Ant series of three books are hand-painted tales of Freedom, Friendship and Community for kids 4-8. They are three creative tales about a little red ant with a big message on the important value of that freedom and the acceptance of others. They encourage kids to ask questions about their own family history and learn about others through activity and fun,” she added.

"Promoting inclusion, diversity, and just plain fun puts a bright sparkle in every child's eye and soul,” says Robbin Miller, also from Shrewsbury. She is the author of several picture books for children with the same messages of acceptance including Playgroup Time and Three Best Friends. Robbin’s other books will also be available at the event.

Books will be available at the bookshop or email us.

Fern Nissim
Illustrating children’s books has always been a dream of Fern's. Her early art training at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and Mass College of Art offered her a world of artistic opportunity. Fern’s career path took her in different directions, but she always planned to return to the arts someday. As her first foray in illustration, Fern adapted her Dad’s original story, Antiline’s Brave Adventure, into a rhyming format for her own grandchildren. In the second book Antiline’s True Discovery, written and illustrated by Fern and Sue Fleishman, they have kept the integrity and personality of the main character as she moves forward on her journey of self-discovery and awareness of the world around her.

Robbin Miller

She has written four picture books: Playgroup Time for young babies and toddlers; Three Best Friends for children ages 6-9 years old; Breaking Barriers: A Girl's Dream to Play Little League with Boys for children ages 8-11 years old, and she co-wrote The Stray with her son EJ, who was only 9 years old in 2019. Robbin also likes gardening and spending time with her family and therapy dog, Woody.
