An Accidental Bookseller is the first memoir about the legendary bookshop, Foyles, to be written by a member of the Foyle family. The author, Bill Samuel, is the oldest grandson of William Foyle who, with his brother Gilbert, set up the bookselling business in July 1903. Bill was vice-chairman of the company from shortly after the death of Christina Foyle in 1999 until 2008 and a non-executive director until the business was sold to Waterstones in September 2018 and he describes his relationship with Foyles as ‘exhilarating, challenging, frustrating, fun and at times painful’.

The memoir is, in his own words, ‘not a history of Foyles or a biography of William or Christina. It is a very personal memoir of my relationships with a wonderful family business and with two extraordinary people. It is memories from childhood mingled with recent events and discoveries. It is subjective, personal, partial and incomplete.’

It is full of anecdotes, both of Foyles and of the two remarkable people who ran it for almost 100 years. It covers the extraordinary growth under the co-founder William, the gradual decline under Christina, and the remarkable rejuvenation which has taken place since her death.

It will appeal to all those who have an affection for what has been, and arguably once more is, one of the great bookshops of the world.
